Twitter is set to be the next great social networking site and it has been growing by leaps and bounds since its arrival on the internet in 2006. People who own twitter accounts have begun to use them for a variety of things from connecting with like minded people, to advertising, to following their favorite celebrities. When a twitter user

likes what you have to say they may choose to become your follower. In return, when you find people you are interested in, you can become their follower. The idea is to be able to stay up to date and keep your followers informed about your daily activities, things you find interesting on the net, or anything you can fit into your “what are you doing?” section.

When you communicate on twitter, you are tweeting. A “T weet”, is a message you create that is limited to 140 characters. You can update your “what are you doing?” section from your home computer, mobile phone, or instant messaging. Twitter limits your tweets to 140 characters to keep things interesting by giving short updates of what you are doing instead of long, drawn out emails. Unlike an email, you do not expect a reply when you tweet. It’s just a way to stay in touch and keep your followers up to date.

Twitter is also growing as a business tool to keep clients and customers informed or to advertise your latest product. By using twitter, a business can keep in touch with their customers and broadcast their latest updates or current news. Newspapers, magazines, radio stations, and news channels have begun to use twitter as a way to keep their followers up to date with what’s happening in the world.

Once you open your first Twitter account you will need to find followers. How to get followers may become your next question. The first step is to simply start tweeting. Talk about your interests, an online article your find interesting, what you are doing, your favorite quotes, or anything else you want to add to your 140 character “what are you doing?” section. Another way to find followers is to click the find people button in the upper right hand corner. Try typing in subjects you are interested in: Celebrities, Music, Career, Sports etc. You will find there are groups of followers that share your same interests. Check out their page and if you like what they have to say, click the follow button. Soon you will be following several people and you may find they will follow you back. Just stay kind and respectful, the same web etiquette that applies to email and forum conversations applies to twitter.

By becoming a person who talks about interesting links, your experiences, and other things you enjoy online and in your daily life, you will soon begin to gain a large amount of followers. Participation is the key. You can’t expect people to follow and converse with you if you don’t share in their interests as well. When you gain a follower, check to see if they have a website or blog listed in their profile. If they do, check it out and participate. This will ensure that you keep your followers. By becoming a person of value at Twitter, you will be able to amass a large following from the start.
